Proverbs 31: A Virtuous Wife

Proverbs 31 is one of the most quoted chapters in the Bible, but I believe it’s also one of the most misunderstood.

First, let’s talk about where it sits. Proverbs comes right after Psalms and right before Ecclesiastes. While many people read Proverbs simply as wisdom literature—and it absolutely is—I believe it’s also a guide to discerning God’s will and living a life that honors Him.

The chapter ends with a well-known passage, Proverbs 31:10–31. Something important to notice is that this scripture is not describing just any woman. It is specifically describing a wife.

It begins with a question:

“Who can find a virtuous and capable wife? She is more precious than rubies.” (Proverbs 31:10)

The word virtuous means having or showing high moral standards. A similar word would be righteous. Right from the beginning, scripture shows us that this kind of woman is rare.

In biblical times, rubies were among the most prized and valuable gemstones. They symbolized wealth, royalty, and high status. In other words, her value is incomparable.

“Her husband can trust her, and she will greatly enrich his life.” (Proverbs 31:11)

To be trustworthy means she can be relied on to be honest and truthful. To enrich means she improves the quality and value of his life.

“She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life.” (Proverbs 31:12)

Every day she contributes something good—something righteous—to their life together.

“She finds wool and flax and busily spins it.” (Proverbs 31:13)“She is like a merchant’s ship, bringing her food from afar.” (Proverbs 31:14)“She gets up before dawn to prepare breakfast for her household and plan the day’s work for her servant girls.” (Proverbs 31:15)

These verses show us that she makes sure her household is taken care of first. Her home and her family are a priority.

“She goes to inspect a field and buys it; with her earnings she plants a vineyard.” (Proverbs 31:16)“She is energetic and strong, a hard worker.” (Proverbs 31:17)“She makes sure her dealings are profitable; her lamp burns late into the night.” (Proverbs 31:18)

These verses reveal something powerful: she is also a businesswoman. But not just any businesswoman—a profitable and successful one. Words similar to profitable would be useful, advantageous, and beneficial. She manages her resources wisely.

“Her hands are busy spinning thread, her fingers twisting fiber.” (Proverbs 31:19)

This reminds us that she isn’t afraid to work. She gets her hands dirty and is willing to do the work herself.

“She extends a helping hand to the poor and opens her arms to the needy.” (Proverbs 31:20)“She has no fear of winter for her household, for everyone has warm clothes.” (Proverbs 31:21)

These verses show us her heart for others. She helps the poor and the needy.

When it says she is not afraid of winter because her household is clothed, I believe it signifies two things: first, she experiences provision because she gives. Second, she prepares for what is to come.

“She makes her own bedspreads. She dresses in fine linen and purple gowns.” (Proverbs 31:22)

This verse shows us that she is a woman of many talents. Remember; don’t let anyone discourage the gifts that God placed inside of you.

“Her husband is well known at the city gates, where he sits with the other civic leaders.” (Proverbs 31:23)

Her character and support contribute to the respect and reputation of her household.

“She makes belted linen garments and sashes to sell to the merchants.” (Proverbs 31:24)

Again, we see her entrepreneurial spirit. She is resourceful and productive.

One of the most well-known verses follows:

“She is clothed with strength and dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future.” (Proverbs 31:25)

I believe the strength here is not physical strength but the capacity to withstand pressure and endure difficult seasons. And the dignity mentioned isn’t just about the respect of others—it reflects the presence of self-respect.

“When she speaks, her words are wise, and she gives instructions with kindness.” (Proverbs 31:26)

Her wisdom shows up in the way she speaks and how she leads others—with kindness.

“She carefully watches everything in her household and suffers nothing from laziness.” (Proverbs 31:27)

I’ll be honest—this verse personally hits home for me. Your home should not come last to anything, your foundation is built at home.

“Her children stand and bless her. Her husband praises her.” (Proverbs 31:28)

This is powerful because the people closest to us know us best. No matter what we present to the world, our household sees the real us.

“There are many virtuous and capable women in the world, but you surpass them all!” "Many daughters have done well, but you excel them all."(Proverbs 31:29)

I like to think of this as encouragement from our Heavenly Father. Even though this standard can feel overwhelming, He knows what He placed inside of us.

“Charm is deceptive, and beauty does not last; but a woman who fears the Lord will be greatly praised.” (Proverbs 31:30)

Attraction and appearance are temporary. But reverence and fear of the Lord—that is something truly worth honoring.

Finally, the chapter closes with this promise:

“Reward her for all she has done. Let her deeds publicly declare her praise.” (Proverbs 31:31)

Other translations say:“Give her the fruit of her hands, and let her own works praise her at the gates.” (NKJV)“Give her everything she deserves.” (MSG)

This reminds us that what we sow matters. Our work, our faithfulness, and our character will not go unnoticed. It also reminds us that we have value as wives and that we will be accountable not only for what we do, but also for what we choose not to do.
