In Romans 7 Apostle Paul explains to us that the power of the law of Moses (10 commandments and laws we learn about in the Book of Exodus) is now dead to us when we died (became new creatures in Christ) with Jesus. Scripture tells us, (Romans 7:6 NLT) “Now we can serve God, not in the old way of obeying the letter of the law, but in the new way of living in the Spirit.”
This does not suggest that the laws of Moses’ time were wrong. In fact, Paul says, “It was the law that showed me my sin”. He uses the Commandment “You must not covet”, to describe how sin aroused the covetous desires in him. Now let’s look at the word “covet”, I mean, do we really know what that word means. It is not a word that we use in every day language today.
Cov-et
Verb
Yearn to possess or have (something)
“You must not covet” means that you should not have a desire to possess something that belongs to someone else. You should not desire to have someone else’s possessions, spouses, positions, etc.
So the law is good, as Paul said, the law commands us to do things that are Holy, and just, and good. But the sinful nature that we are all a slave to, is powerful and tries to consume us. Thank God for Jesus Christ our Lord.
Because we belong to Christ, there is no condemnation. Scripture reminds us (Romans 8:2-4 NLT) “because you belong to him, the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death”. “The law of Moses was unable to save because of the weakness of our sinful nature. So God did what the law could not do. He sent His own Son in a body like we sinners have. And in that body God declared an end to sins control over us by giving His Son as a sacrifice for our sins.”
-Side Bar: Do y’all remember when Abraham was asked to sacrifice Isaac? Doesn’t that seem like a foreshadow of what God was going to do with Jesus?
(Romans 8:5 NLT) says, “Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit, think about things that pleases the Spirit.” Now, I know this to be true, when you become anew, your thoughts change, your heart posture changes, when God is within you, he corrects, he preserves, he covers, His Spirit truly lives within us. Scripture says, (Romans 8:9 NLT) “You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit living within you.”
This is why we can have peace in knowing that even though or bodies will die, the same Spirit that rose Christ from the dead is living within us, and will do the same for us.
“For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.”
(Romans 8:13 NKJV)
So we can be confident in knowing that as heirs to the throne, we have full rights to the kingdom and the bodies that he has promised us. With (Romans 8:28-29 NLT) telling us that “God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. For God knew his people in advance, and He chose them to be like His Son, so that His Son would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.”
-Side Bar- Let’s geek out for a minute, y’all Jesus is our brother. Like, who wouldn’t want to have Jesus as a sibling. You want to talk about being my brother’s keeper, he gave his life for us!
In closing, “If God is for us, WHO can ever be against us? He spared His one Son for us, why would He not give us everything else?” (Paraphrased Romans 8:31-32 NLT)
In (Matthew 5:17 NLT) Jesus tells us, “Don’t miss understand why I have come. I did not come to abolish the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets. No, I came to accomplish their purpose.”
God is within us, and He cares about us.
